Regardless of Washington's status as a legalization pioneer, the state's business has for some time been slacking with regards to assorted variety. According to the Washington State Commission on African American Affairs, fewer than 1% of the state’s 556 recreational cannabis licenses alive were issued to businesses owned by African Americans.

A bill gone by the state Legislature earlier in the week is getting to improve that situation and hopefully repair a number of the damage done by the war on drugs. House Bill 2870, sponsored by Rep. Eric Pettigrew (D-Seattle), creates the state’s first Marijuana Social Equity Program.

It also would require the state’s Liquor and Cannabis Board to supply social equity applicants with exclusive access to a particular number of revoked cannabis retail licenses present.
