A major cannabis seizure near the India–Nepal border has raised serious questions about the possible involvement of local police personnel.
Authorities recovered approximately 419 kilograms of ganja from a pickup truck in Bihar’s Madhubani district during a joint operation involving the local police and Special Task Force.
Four people were arrested in connection with the consignment, including Vinod Sahni, whom investigators have identified as the alleged main accused in the trafficking network. The origin and intended destination of the cannabis remain under investigation.
Dial 112 Driver Accused of Helping Traffickers
The case became more serious after investigators reportedly found evidence suggesting that the driver of a Dial 112 emergency-response vehicle had colluded with the alleged traffickers.
Some reports claim that the police vehicle was travelling ahead of the cannabis-loaded pickup truck, potentially acting as an escort. However, the precise involvement of each accused person has yet to be established through the investigation and court proceedings.
Three police personnel were subsequently suspended for different reasons.
A sub-inspector attached to the emergency-response unit was reportedly suspended for being absent from duty. Senior officials also suspended the officer in charge of the concerned police station over alleged negligence and dereliction of duty.
Suspension is an administrative action and does not by itself establish criminal guilt.
Senior Police Officials Review the Investigation
Madhubani Superintendent of Police Yogendra Kumar stated that negligence or participation in illegal activities would not be tolerated at any level of the police force.
Given the seriousness of the allegations, Mithila Range Deputy Inspector General Manoj Kumar Tiwari visited the police station concerned and personally reviewed the investigation.
Police are now questioning the arrested suspects to identify the source of the cannabis, its proposed delivery location and other people who may be connected with the alleged trafficking network.
Nepal Border Remains a Smuggling Challenge
Madhubani shares an international border with Nepal, and the region contains numerous roads and remote crossing points. Authorities regularly conduct operations against the illegal movement of cannabis, liquor and other contraband through this area.
The latest seizure is significant not only because of its size but also because of the suspected involvement of people connected with law enforcement.
If the allegations are substantiated, the case would demonstrate how trafficking networks may attempt to exploit official vehicles or local connections to avoid inspection.
For now, the investigation remains active. The arrested individuals are accused—not convicted—and the suspected involvement of police personnel will need to be established through evidence and the legal process.
