India is making big advances in medical research, especially with the launch of the "Cannabis Research Project" by CSIR-IIIM in Jammu, which is the first of its kind in the country. Union Minister Jitendra Singh stated that this project has great potential to create high-quality medicines for nerve pain, cancer, and epilepsy that could even be exported. He highlighted that this initiative will attract more investment to Jammu and Kashmir.
The project involves a new agreement between CSIR-IIIM and IndusScan, aiming to produce medicines that India usually imports. Dr. Jitendra Singh praised CSIR-IIIM as India’s oldest research institute, known for past achievements like discovering mint and leading the purple revolution. Now, this cannabis project adds further prestige.
He also suggested that nearby institutions like IIM, IIT, and AIIMS could work together on this project, with IIM aiding in marketing, AIIMS in clinical trials, and IIT in technical support, as all these institutions are close to each other in Jammu, which is becoming a center of education in India.
